10 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Health

Top 10 Things Everyone Should Know About Health

Despite spending enormous amounts of money on healthcare, Americans are becoming increasingly unhealthy. Chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, anxiety, and depression are taking a serious toll on both physical and mental well-being, as well as finances. The common “one illness—one pill” approach is expensive and often comes with unwanted side effects.

So what can we do?

Every day, I work with families, guiding them toward healthier lifestyles that include proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and stress management. Over time, I’ve noticed the same core principles come up again and again in helping people build a healthier life.

Here are the top 10 things I wish everyone knew:

1. Prevention is better than treatment

Most people visit the doctor only when something is wrong, often with chronic conditions. However, prevention is safer, more cost-effective, and easier than treatment. Major diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are far more responsive to healthy lifestyle choices than to medications.

2. Real food is real medicine

As Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine.”
Whole, natural foods provide powerful health benefits that no drug can match. Fresh, organic fruits and vegetables nourish both body and mind. Even better, prepare your own meals and enjoy them with family or friends.

3. You must unplug to recharge

We live in a constantly busy world. Chronic sleep deprivation is a major risk factor for depression, especially in young people. Take time to rest, reduce screen time, and create calm spaces in your daily life.

4. You can’t eliminate stress—but you can manage it

Stress is unavoidable, but how you handle it matters. Practices like meditation, yoga, journaling, or creative activities can help you stay present and reduce the harmful effects of stress.

5. Nature is a necessity, not a luxury

Spending time in nature improves mood, boosts energy, and reduces stress. Whether it’s a walk in the park or simply breathing fresh air, reconnecting with nature has powerful healing effects.

6. You don’t have to choose between conventional and alternative medicine

You can benefit from both. Integrative medicine combines the safest and most effective treatments, whether they come from modern medicine or traditional practices.

7. Healthy relationships are essential

Strong social connections can protect against depression, heart disease, and even cancer. Supportive relationships reduce stress and contribute significantly to overall well-being.

8. Going green can improve your health

Reducing exposure to chemicals and limiting antibiotic overuse helps protect your body. Eco-friendly choices benefit both your health and the environment.

9. Not all germs are bad

Your body depends on beneficial bacteria for digestion and immunity. Overuse of antibiotics can disrupt this balance. Support your gut health with probiotics and fermented foods.

10. Real change takes effort—but it’s worth it

There are no shortcuts to lasting health. Building healthy habits around eating, sleeping, and exercise requires time and consistency—but the long-term benefits are invaluable.

Conclusion

True health doesn’t come from quick fixes. It comes from small, consistent lifestyle choices made every day. Investing in your well-being is the most valuable investment you can make.
